This post may be premature (as Rory McIlroy, Brian Harman or both might need to be added later on) but shooting 62 in the U.S. Open is worthy of all the coverage it deserves, including the equipment used to produce them by Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele.

Fowler’s 10-birdie, two-bogey round was accentuated by solid driving and even better putting. Fowler’s driver is a 9-degree Cobra AeroJet LS (the low-spin version) with a Mitsubishi Diamana White Board 70X shaft. Fowler, who has favored a shorter driver length in recent years, has this one at 44.5 inches.

For the Odyssey O-Works Jailbird Mini putter, Fowler put on a fresh grip this week and the early results couldn’t have been better as Fowler led the morning wave in strokes gained/putting at an other-worldly 4.52 shots better than the field average.

But it was the Cobra King Tour 5-iron into the 16th hole that Fowler said was his shot of the day. Fowler’s irons are a half-inch shorter than standard and range from 1 degree to 2 degrees flatter than standard on the lie angle.

As for Schauffele, his eight-birdie, no-bogey 62 included a bunch of lengthy putts with his Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas mallet. The prototype putter is almost a carbon copy of the Odyssey O-Works #7 CH he used for years, but the face on the Toulon provides a firmer feel that Schauffele wanted.

Into the greens Schauffele hit 16 of 18 greens with his Callaway Apex TCB irons with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts. He ranked first in strokes gained/approach for the morning wave at 3.75 shots above the field average.
