U.S. Open 2023: Dustin Johnson shows up to LACC with Wayne Gretzky, just hand him the trophy now

June 17, 2023

In recent years, we've seen more of golfers arriving to the course at big tournaments. Who could ever forget Tiger Woods showing up to the final round of the 2018 Tour Championship wearing a tank top and giving everyone a gun show? The tournament was over before he struck a shot that day.

Well, Saturday at the 2023 U.S. Open was no different with many of the guys flaunting Los Angeles Country Club's notoriously strict dress codes and rolling in wearing workout clothes. They just didn't look quite as intimidating as Tiger. No offense, Rory.

One guy who might be as physically imposing, Dustin Johnson, showed up wearing his golf clothes. But his intimidation came from the person he showed up with: Wayne Gretzky.

Of course, Gretzky is Johnson's father-in-law and we see him following around DJ at tournaments all the time. But he's still THE Great One. And this is Los Angeles, where he memorably played seven-plus seasons of his historic NHL career for the Kings. So that's still quite an entrance by Johnson. The two-time major champ trails Rickie Fowler by four entering the third round, but tournament officials might want to hand him the trophy now.

Also, smart move by Wayne to wear a credential. You know, in case DJ does wind up winning and he wants to storm the 18th green. As Adam Hadwin found out at last week's Canadian Open, you can never be too careful around security.
