This year's Masters will mark the end of one of the most storied careers in sports broadcasting history.
CBS announced on Wednesday that the 2024 tournament at Augusta National will be the 40th and final Masters for Verne Lundquist. The legendary announcer will retire when he comes down from the 16th tower for the final time.
"Yes Sir!" CBS tweeted. "As Verne Lundquist gets set to call his 40th Masters on CBS in April, he has announced that it will be his final Masters for the Network."
You could argue that Lundquist was behind the two most famous calls in Masters history. "Yes sir!," of course, refers to him calling Jack Nicklaus' putter-raised birdie on the 17th hole during his famed comeback victory in 1986. And then there was Tiger Woods' chip-in on No. 16 in 2005, probably the most replayed golf highlight in history:
Of course, Lundquist was also a staple on CBS' coverage of other sports throughout a career that also included stints at ABC and TNT. He retired from college football (He called the "Kick-Six" at the 2013 Iron Bowl) in 2016 and college basketball (He called Christian Laettner's buzzer-beater that sent Duke to the 1992 Final Four) in 2018, but has continued working the Masters. Hopefully, all golf fans will get treated to one final memorable call from him this April.
