The ultimate golf savage: Former NFL coach only plays golf barefoot and uses a 5-iron to putt

January 11, 2018

We've seen all sorts of unusual golf quirks and behaviors in the past year—from funky golf swings...to really crazy golf swings and everything type of golf savage in between.

What was documented by the PGA Tour during a Sony Open pro-am, however, is a first for us. Former University of Hawaii and SMU football coach June Jones, who also had stints in the NFL and currently coaches the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, showed he has a case that's he's an ultimate golf savage—only playing golf barefoot and putting with a 5-iron.

One, rolling putts with a 5-iron is really impressive. Talk about intimidation, if you're playing a match against a guy who doesn't carry a putter—forget about it. But consider that Jones will only play if he can play barefoot? I guess he's never played fall or winter golf in a colder climate. Because that would not be fun.

You need to hear Jones describe his ways to fully appreciate his savagery.

OK, it makes sense that Jones transitioned to putting with an iron given a battle of the yips in the past. Still, it's impressive stuff he can roll it so well with an iron. Those are some impressive skills.

And we're guessing Coach Jones won't be accepting our invitation to next fall's member-guest tournament if the weather isn't 60 or above. When you've spent a lot of your life in Hawaii, this type of mentality makes sense.

Not sure most golfers are comfortable enough with the appearance of their feet to put them on display for an entire round. Kudos to you, Coach.
