The Tournament of Champions is returning
It began in 1953 as the Tournament of Champions, became the MONY Tournament of Champions in 1977 and the Infiniti Tournament of Champions in 1991. Since 1994, however, Tournament of Champions had ceased being part of the title of one of the PGA Tour's longest running events (though it remained a tournament of champions -- lower case t and c).
Hyundai, the new title sponsor of the event, is restoring the original moniker, it announced on Thursday. The PGA Tour's season-opening event on the Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui will now be called the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Hyundai has entered into a three-year agreement as the title sponsor.
