The sons also rise at the U.S. Amateur

August 25, 2009

A number of sons of more prominent fathers (for the moment, anyway) have advanced to match play in the U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills. Among them:

-- Kevin Tway, son of former PGA Championship winner Bob Tway, who tied for ninth in 36-holes of medal play.

-- Mike Van Sickle (tied for 20th), son of former Golf World senior writer (and now a Sports Illustrated senior writer) Gary Van Sickle.

-- Peter Uihlein (tied for 45th), son of Titleist and FootJoy chief Wally Uihlein.

Meanwhile, John Kostis, son of renowned instructor and CBS analyst Peter Kostis, and Tyson Alexander, son of Florida coach Buddy Alexander and grandson of the late PGA Tour player Skip Alexander, are among 27 that will vie in a playoff for the remaining four spots in match play on Wednesday morning.

Among the sons (and grandsons) of renowned players who didn't advance include Sam Saunders (grandson of Arnold Palmer), Gunner Wiebe (son of Champions Tour player Mark Wiebe) and Aaron Stewart (son of the late Payne Stewart).
