Texas men finish fall at No. 1

November 23, 2011

Texas started the fall ranked fifth in the preseason poll. Three wins and several thousand turned heads later, the Longhorns have safely claimed the top spot in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I coaches' poll, earning 19 of the 22 available first-place votes.

Not a whole lot of movement from the previous poll, although Oregon jumped Auburn into the No. 2 spot.

Five schools either set or matched their all-time high since the resumption of the poll in 2001-02: No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Oregon, No. 3 Arkansas (previous high: 4), No. 7 North Florida (12th) and T-24 Wichita State, which is making its first-ever appearance in the poll.

As was the case last time, it was the school that dropped out of the top 25 that might be the most interesting bit of news. Georgia is missing from the ranking for the first time ever, bringing the number of schools that have appeared in every poll since the preseason ranking (89 total) in 2001-02 to two (Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State).

Two other tidbits:

Lynn hung on to the No. 1 ranking in the final Golf World/Nike Golf Division II coaches' poll. The Fighting Knights played five tournaments in the first half of the 2011-12 season, winning at the Sandestin Collegiate championship and the Donald Ross Intercollegiate, while finishing in the fop five in the other starts. The school was one of seven to earn at least one first-place vote, claiming four of the 19 available.

Guilford, winner of two fall titles, retained the top spot in the final Golf World/Nike Golf Division III coaches' poll of the fall. The Quakers claimed the team title at the Golfweek Fall Invitational and the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial, and earned 13 of the 15 available first-place votes.

Oklahoma Christian closed out the fall season as the top ranked team in the Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA coaches' poll. The Eagles were the unanimous choice, claiming all 12 first-place votes after winning both NAIA tournaments the team entered in the fall and finishing third and fourth in two D-I events.

Meridian and South Mountain both held their top spots in the Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA Division I and Division II coaches' polls respectively. The former won three times this fall while finishing second in its other two starts. The later won the NJCAA D-II Fall Previvew and was the top squad the entire fall.
