Steve Nash won the NBA MVP twice, led the league in assists five times and made eight All-Star teams during a playing career that will land him a spot in basketball's Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible in 2020. But for all his accomplishments on the court, the point guard never won an NBA Championship. In fact, his teams never even reached the NBA Finals.
But that changed when Nash became a consultant for the Golden State Warriors last season. And on Wednesday, he was finally awarded that elusive championship ring from Golden State head coach Steve Kerr. A shirtless Steve Kerr, that is. Nash shared this amusing photo on Instagram:
According to SFGate.com, Nash has worked with fellow two-time MVP Stephen Curry since 2015, and Kevin Durant refers to him as "my Yoda." The team officially received their rings on opening night last week, but Nash declined to be a part of the ceremony.
"This is their moment," Nash recently told Marc Stein of the New York Times when asked why he was a no-show. "I couldn't be happier to be part of a championship team and, more importantly, this championship culture. But when you've played 18 years in the NBA and you win it all as a consultant, it doesn't feel right to do anything but stay in the background. I don't want to disrespect anything or upset anyone, but I don't feel like it's my place to be there."
Fair enough. And the low-key "ceremony" looked pretty fun anyway. We're not sure what exactly is going on in the photo, but Nash looks happy to finally receive the hardware he's long coveted, and that's all that matters. Well, that, and the Steves' subtle reminder that we should all recycle. Thanks, guys. We should.
