Squirrel gets loose on field during pro football game, reminds us that life is precious

July 24, 2017

For all the known differences between Canadian football and what's played here in the U.S. -- three downs versus four, bigger field, the greatness of Doug Flutie -- let's also not overlook the likelihood of a rodent appearing at midfield during a game.

It's doubtful it would ever happen in the NFL, probably because Roger Goodell would forbid it. But here is a squirrel on the field mid-play during Sunday night's game between the Calgary Stampeders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders, in what might well be the most interesting sequence of the CFL season.

Most striking from this footage is the close-up of the squirrel's rapidly-beating heart. Was he contemplating his own mortality after narrowly avoiding a fatal trampling? Did he have the Roughriders with the points and was worried they might not cover? We tried to put these questions to the squirrel directly, but he was receiving treatment after the game and was unavailable for comment.
