After a record-breaking Sentry in which Hideki Matsuyama finished with a smoldering 35 under to win the 2025 season opener in Maui, the PGA Tour takes a quick flight to Honolulu for the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club. This will be the first full-field event of the year, after last week’s signature event, and will feature Matsuyama looking for back-to-back Hawaii victories.

Along with the Japanese major champ, there will be quite a few top-20 pros teeing off this week such as Keegan Bradley, Sahith Theegala, Robert MacIntyre, Billy Horschel and Russell Henley. Luke Clanton is back as well. He wasn’t able to win a tournament in 2024 (a la Nick Dunlap), but the 21-year-old amateur sensation out of Florida State did have four top-five finishes in just eight tour starts a year ago, including a T-2 at the RSM Classic. Speaking of prodigies, Mao Matsuyama will be making his PGA Tour debut at Waiʻalae after winning last year’s Japan Amateur at 15 years old.

A year ago, Grayson Murray won the Sony Open in a three-man playoff over Bradley and Byeong Hun An. It was his second career win on tour but sadly would be his last, the 30-year-old taking his own life in May. His family recently announced the Grayson Murray Foundation to coincide with the anniversary of his last win. The foundation’s goals are to raise awareness and support for mental health and addiction challenges.

Murray’s family will be on-site at the tournament and pin flags will have red/black ribbons to memorialize Murray’s love of the Carolina Hurricanes.

This week's winner will receive a $1.566 million cut of the $8.7 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points.

Now with The Greenbrier’s Old White course out of the rotation, Waialae Country Club is the only Seth Raynor design on the PGA Tour schedule. In the 1960s, much of the front nine had to be rerouted due the construction of a nearby hotel, but many Raynor elements can still be found, particularly after Tom Doak and his Renaissance Design team’s work over the past decade-plus. Though the now iconic ‘W’s in the trees on the 16th hole (the club’s seventh) are the most recognizable feature of the course, true architectural buffs will appreciate the par-3 17th hole and its Redan green, plus the Biarritz on the fourth.
