So why are they so many of them?
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin has four assistant captains and his European counterpart Colin Montgomerie has indicated he'll have at least three and possibly four. Why?
Jose Maria Olazabal, who is among those Montgomerie is considering for an assistant captain, provided a pretty good job description that doesn't make the position particularly appealing.
"I already had that post," he said. "It's a useful job, but it's more or less no man's land and not very satisfying as you neither make decisions nor play. You spend your time listening to people."
