Players Championship: Buoyed by green pants on St. Paddy’s Day, Scottie Scheffler holes out from fairway for eagle

Scottie Scheffler has put in a gritty performance at TPC Sawgrass this week. He came out of blocks flying on Thursday but early Friday his neck seized up and he’s been playing injured since, clubbing up with his irons and struggling to hit draws off the tee. Yet somehow the World No. 1 has hung around and was rewarded for his efforts on Sunday when he holed out from the fairway on the tricky par-4 fourth hole for an unlikely eagle.

These are the kind of breaks you get when you wear green pants on St. Patrick’s Day. The eagle moved Scheffler to 14 under for the tournament, four back of leader Xander Schauffele.

Not only is Scheffler is hoping to log back-to-back wins after last week’s victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he’s also looking to become the first player to ever successfully defend their Players Championship title. There’s a long way to go and a lot of ground to make up, but with greens this soft, irons this dialed and the luck of the Irish on his side, anything is possible.
