This beyond humiliating Padres fight song is the reason San Diego never wins anything

October 18, 2022

It’s true. Think about it. When was the last time a professional San Diego sports teams won anything? The Padres won an NL Pennant in 1984 and 1998. The Chargers, who got the hell out of dodge a few years ago, have a single AFC Championship to their name, and that came back in 1994. That’s it. That’s the story, Wishbone. They've choked it all away time after excruciating time and now we finally know why:

We’re going to do the Steve Buscemi meme now if you don’t mind.

Anyway, that was the scene at Padre fan HQ ahead of their suddenly relevant team’s biggest game in nearly 25 years. They’ve had two-and-a-half decades to come up with something that will echo across the baseball landscape for years to come … and the best they came up with is “Philly going down to yellow and brown.” This isn’t an embarrassment, it’s a humiliation. This isn't a symptom of the pain, it's the root of it.

And yet, because there’s always a yet, there’s no real reason to believe the Padres can’t do this. They were considered World Series contenders at the start of the season and now, one underwhelming 162-game campaign and franchise-mortgaging trade later, they are. Funny the way that works. Whether or not the baseball gods will allow it after this unforgivable auditory sin is another question, however.
