The Ryder Cup is returning to Spain in 2031.

Ramon Nogué, president of the Catalan Golf Federation, told the Associated Press last week that Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort in Caldes de Malavella has been awarded the matches, saying it would soon be made official. And that came on Tuesday from Ryder Cup Europe.

“Today’s announcement not only recognizes Camiral as one of Europe’s leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup,” said Guy Kinnings, chief executive of the European Tour Group, in a press release.”

The resort, formally known as PGA Catalunya, is located in the northeastern part of the country, with the Stadium course having hosted the DP World Tour’s Open de España three times. It also was the site of the final stage of the DP World Tour qualifying school from 2008 to 2016 and will host the DP World Tour’s Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship in 2028, 2029 and 2030. It’s ranked No. 3 in the country, according to Golf Digest’s Best Courses in Spain rankings.

This will be the second time the matches will be played in Spain, the previous one coming in 1997 when Valderrama Golf Club in Andalusia hosted the event. That year, Europe won 14½-13½ with Spain’s Seve Ballesteros serving as the team’s captain.

Rebranded as the previous PGA Catalunya course, the Stadium course at Camiral has hosted a European Tour event on multiple occasions, most recently the Catalunya Championship in 2022, won by Spaniard Adri Arnaus. The course features elevated tees with numerous downhill tee shots and doglegs framed by fir trees and heather. Just a few year ago, the course underwent a major renovation in an effort of sustainability while also moving around a few holes.

““The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997,” Kinnings said. “It is one of the world’s leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time.”

“Hosting the Ryder Cup is the realization of a long-held dream to bring golf’s greatest sporting event to Catalonia and Spain,” said Denis O’Brien, the Irish businessman who bought the resort in 2008. “For the communities of Girona, Costa Brava and Barcelona, it will create immediate economic benefits, driving high value golf and leisure tourism in the years leading up to the 2031 Ryder Cup, and a long-lasting legacy built on the reputation of hosting one of the greatest sporting events in the world. We would like to thank the Catalan and Spanish Government and the Spanish Golf Federation for all of their support and we look forward to continuing our great relationship with Ryder Cup Europe.”

This will be the fourth time the Ryder Cup will be played in continental Europe. In addition to Valderrama, Le Golf National in Paris (2018) and Marco Simone in Rome (2023) have held the event.
