Ryder Cup 2025: Watch fans lead a hilarious countdown as the beer tent opens at Bethpage

On Thursday, I took the 7:58 a.m. Long Island Rail Road train from Grand Central to Farmingdale to wander around Bethpage Black, check out the golfers warming up and spend (way too much) money at the merch store. It was around 8:15 when I saw the first beer cracked open, and then everywhere I looked was a brown paper bag with what appeared to be an alcoholic beverage inside it. Can’t say for certain … journalistic ethics and all.
Nothing but respect to these early drinkers, who had a long and rainy day ahead of them. But this experience made me, umm, less than shocked to see this Ryder Cup beer-countdown clip go viral on Friday morning.
Rarely do you see a bunch of individuals—mostly men—count down for beer. And yet, the Ryder Cup is a special event, which requires strong vocal chords and equally strong stomachs. The Pouring Bar opens at 9 a.m., and thus, 9 a.m. on the dot is when the beers start pouring.
Patina, operating F&B for most of the Ryder Cup, estimated that they will be selling around 475,000 beers over the week at Bethpage, with 17,500 premium guests per day. That doesn’t include Bethpage Black’s clubhouse and those illicit LIRR beverages.
That’s a good chunk of change, especially when you remember the prices.
$15 for a 16 oz. Michelob Ultra? That’s almost as bad as JT's putting on Friday morning. Hopefully, the Americans get their groove back. If not, there will be quite a few not-sober fans ready to let the U.S. team know about it.
