Ryder Cup 2023: Cameras caught the exact moment Justin Thomas learned of Team USA's historic 9-and-7(!) loss
A sea of blue once again covered the scoreboard at the Ryder Cup on Saturday morning, but one result may just have well been flashing in neon colors.
Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka were supposed to be Team USA's strongest pairing and for good reason. Zach Johnson had to feel pretty good about trotting out the World No. 1 and a five-time major champ, two players used to making history. Instead, they made history in humiliating fashion.
This duo did the unthinkable, losing 9 and 7 at the hands of Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg. Yes, that's NINE AND SEVEN. And, yes, that's a Ryder Cup record for the most lopsided loss.
Needless to say, everyone was a bit stunned by that score. And that included Justin Thomas. The two-time major champ was playing in the match ahead when he learned of the shocking result, and cameras caught his reaction that looked like most golf fans in the U.S. waking up and seeing that on their TVs.
Yep, Justin. Nine and seven. It's true. It's really true.
Cameras also caught Scheffler in tears after the loss so we hope JT took it easy on his teammate even though Scottie got in his grill recently when Texas beat Alabama in football. Besides, Thomas and Jordan Spieth lost their Saturday morning match as well. Although next to a 9-and-7 drubbing, a 2-and-1 defeat seems like a big win.
