Ryan Brehm came to the Puerto Rico Open needing a solo second-place finish or better to retain his PGA Tour card. That’s a daunting enough task to begin with, but even more so when the track record shows a world ranking of 773rd and no top-10s ever on the PGA Tour.

Brehm, however, played the tournament of his life, finishing with a final-round 67 in, at times, rainy, blustery conditions to take the title at Grand Reserve in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, and re-set his career in the process.

Making his final start on a minor medical exception, Brehm suddenly found all aspects of his game working. He ranked second in driving distance at 308.1 yards with his 9-degree Ping G425 LST driver—the low-spin version of the G425 driver line. That helped him be able to hit just under three-fourths of his greens in regulation with a split set of Srixon irons; Brehm uses a pair of Srixon ZX utility irons for his 2- and 3-irons and the company’s ZX7 irons for the 4- through 9-irons.

Missing the green proved little problem for the 35-year-old, too. Brehm converted all four of his sand-save opportunities and all but one of his scrambling chances to lead the field in both categories with his Cleveland RTX ZipCore wedges. On the greens, he was ninth in putts per green in regulation with his Odyssey White Hot OG 2-Ball putter, including a pair of birdie putts outside of 20 feet on Nos. 10 and 11 on Sunday that stretched his lead to seven shots, giving him ample breathing room.

Breathing room. Something Brehm finally has.
