World No. 1 amateur Rose Zhang signs NIL agreement with Callaway

March 28, 2022

CLIFF ENDSLEY

In signing a NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) agreement with Callaway Golf, Rose Zhang becomes the latest amateur golfer to take advantage of the new rules allowing amateurs to get paid while maintaining their amateur status and NCAA eligibility. Zhang, a freshman at Stanford who is among the favorites at this week's Augusta National Women's Amateur, will play Callaway woods, irons, ball and an Odyssey putter (see full bag below).

The World's No. 1-ranked women’s amateur, Zhang has already won the 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 2021 U.S. Girls' Junior among several college and amateur titles. She played for the victorious American team in the 2021 Curtis Cup and already has a spot on the 2022 squad. Zhang, who turns 19 in May, won her first three collegiate events in the fall, becoming Stanford's first golfer—man or woman—to accomplish the feat.

For those unfamiliar with how NIL deals work, basically it allows the athlete to sell the right to their name, image or likeness for use in promotional efforts or other forms of marketing. Some previous collegiate athletes with strong social media followings have signed NIL deals, but it can expand to other areas such as product endorsement with a company.

Zhang has played Callaway equipment during her amateur career. Here is what she will be playing as she embarks on her agreement with Callaway. Note that at times she swaps a Apex 5-iron for the hybrid on some courses.

Ball: Callaway Chrome Soft X (with Stanford logo)
