British Open 2025: This is him. This is your fan of the week at Royal Portrush
There’s been no shortage of enthusiasm for the British Open in Portrush this week. Fans have lined the fairways 10 deep from Tuesday to Sunday, mostly to cheer on local boy Rory McIlroy as he vies for the first home-soil claret jug since Paul Lawrie in 1999.
Unfortunately for the throngs of Guinness-sloshing golf maniacs, Scottie Scheffler is both an unstoppable force and an immovable object. One fan didn’t get the memo or simply didn’t care, however, diving into the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday with an Open flagstick in one hand and a “Go Rory!” sign in the other. Laddies and lassies, we present the winner of this week’s unofficial crazy jug.
The Open has a long history of streaking, so we should count our lucky stars we didn’t see this intrepid Rory fan from the waist down. For his modesty and ingenuity, we are happy to anoint him Royal Portrush’s Fan of the Week honors. Given the scene in Northern Ireland this week, that’s saying A LOT. Just don’t check the leaderboard when you get out, buddy. You might not like what you see.
