Will the PGA Tour one-up itself with a nine-hole playoff this week in Detroit? That Kramer Hickock vs. Harris English tug-of-war into dusk was a reminder that anything is possible on the traveling circus that is the week-to-week PGA Tour.
The summer stop in Detroit was one of the first events in the PGA Tour’s 2020 return to golf after the COVID hiatus, and it returns this week featuring an impressive field and a plethora of storylines.
Last year’s winner, Bryson DeChambeau, will look to defend his championship, and second-place finisher Matthew Wolff will be back in the field as well, continuing his own 2021 return. After taking two months away from golf to focus on his mental health, the 22-year-old had a strong T-15 showing at the U.S. Open and is trying to improve on last year’s runner-up finish.
Along with those two, PGA Championship victor Phil Mickelson will be making his Rocket Mortgage Classic debut, Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama will play in Detroit for the third straight year, and Rickie Fowler will continue his patronage of this Great Lakes stop.
The winner of this event will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.35 million share of the $7.5 million purse.
