Pimento cheese sandwiches, AKA gastronomical catastrophes

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Giving pimento cheese sandwiches another chance, I stopped in a concession stand near the 10th green and asked workers if people actually pay $1.50 for one of those gastronomical catastrophes. Oh, yes, they said. Look, they said, we're sold out. The pimento cheese sandwich tray was empty. A polite woman threatened to go to another counter and bring me a pimento cheese sandwich.

"No, no," I said. "I just wondered if they sold well."

"Yes, they do," she said. "People get really nasty if we don't have 'em."

I fear for America.
