These Guys Are Good
Imagine being so good at golf you could forget where you shot 59? That's this PGA Tour rookie

Mike Mulholland
Imagine for a second that you were good enough to shoot a 59. Ahh, that feels good, right? Now imagine you shot that 59 in your final high school event to win a state title. Man, that feels even better. Now imagine that you did all that and you DON'T remember the name of the course where it happened. Seems impossible, right?
Well, it's not if you're Frankie Capan III. The PGA Tour rookie revealed that on Wednesday ahead of the WM Phoenix Open in what is an all-time (unintentional) flex.
You see, Capan went to high school about 20 minutes from TPC Scottsdale so he had plenty to say in a letter to the tournament asking for a sponsor's exemption. And that included mentioning that 59 to win the 2018 Arizona Div. III state tournament.
"One of the things that I enjoyed writing about was just my experience in high school playing here," Capan, 25, told reporters on Wednesday. "I was lucky to shoot a 59 to close out my high school career my senior year, so I kind of let him know that."
As you should, Frankie. That's impressive stuff. But that led to this exhange moments later:
Q. The 59, was that here at this course?
FRANKIE CAPAN III: It was not, no. It was in Tucson.
Q. What course?
FRANKIE CAPAN III: I don't know. I actually forgot the name. I could look it up, though. They used to play, I think, a senior event there. There's two courses. If you text me, I'll let you know later.
I actually forgot the name? And it's not like this happened decades ago. It was 2018! Back to our thought excercises, imagine being so good at golf that you could forget such a key piece of info about such a memorable round? Must be nice!
But maybe it makes more sense when you consider that's not even the lowest score of Capan's young career. In a tournament. Last year he shot 58 in a Korn Ferry Tour event on his way to finishing third in the season-long standings to earn his PGA Tour card for 2025. So, yeah, this dude can go low.
Oh, and for the record, Frankie's first sub-60 (In a tournament, at least) came at the Sonoran Course at Omni Tucson National, according to azcentral.com. And it would have been another 58 if he hadn't rushed a tap-in on 16.
In any event, Capan will take on one of the PGA Tour's craziest No. 16s in his long-awaited WM Phoenix Open debut. And if he goes low this week, we're pretty sure he'll remember the name of this course.
