If you've been following the PGA Tour for the past year, you're probably aware of Luke Clanton's rapid ascent. In 10 starts, he's racked up four top 10s, including runner-up finishes at both the John Deere Classic and RSM Classic. And he's done all of this while he's still in school.

That's right, Clanton has remained enrolled at Florida State University, where he's repeatedly talked about how much he loves playing college golf. Well, in addition to all the PGA Tour golf he's been playing on the side as well.

Which, apparently, even confused Scottie Scheffler. Ahead of this week's WM Phoenix Open, where Clanton will tee it up against the world's best again, the World No. 1 was asked about the young man calling him one of his role models. Here was Scheffler's funny response.

"First of all, I saw Luke yesterday and I was going to ask him what his status was in terms of getting his card because I feel like I've been seeing him so much playing tournaments that I didn't know if he was still in college or not," Scheffler told reporters at TPC Scottsdale on Wednesday. "So asked him yesterday, 'Are you still in school,' and he's like, 'well, yeah.' I'm like, 'okay, good. You passing some classes?'"

Again, we don't blame Scheffler for the confusion. Clanton has been fixture on PGA Tour leaderboards over the past year. And Scottie's had a lot going on in his own world.

Also, Clanton is on the verge of earning his PGA Tour card. Through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program, the current World No. 1 amateur needs just a made cut this week to earn full-time status. Which he could then defer until next year. When he actually graduates from school.

"He's played great golf and definitely deserves to get his card, so I hope that he plays good this week and locks it up and goes back and does his thing in school," Scheffler said. "But as far as him thinking of me as a role model, I'm here to help with what I can, but at the end of the day I try to come out here and play golf, and if the younger guys have some questions for me, I'm more than happy to answer them."

Scottie just might have some questions of his own first.
