PGA Championship 2025: Sam Burns, Xander Schauffele make wild final-round deal that (kinda) almost comes true

Teeing off a full five hours before the leaders and trailing by 13 shots, Sam Burns and Xander Schauffele seemingly didn't have much to play for on Sunday at the PGA Championship. Not that anyone other than Scottie Scheffler felt like they had a chance of winning with the World No. 1 having seized control of the tournament on Saturday. Just saying.
But the best players on the planet are also the best at finding motivation. And this pair of PGA Tour pro stars found some with an unusual side deal that Burns talked about with CBS' Amanda Balionis after his final round.
"Xander and I joked to start the day, if we both shot 62 we were getting matching tattoos," Burns said. "So we were giving it our best early and it looked pretty good."
Imagine? That would have been a tough one to explain to their wives.
Of course, shooting a 62 in a major is highly unlikely. That being said, Schauffele has two of the five in golf history. And he was cooking again on Sunday. They both were.
The two were a combined eight under through eight holes and both got to five under at some point during their round. In the end, Schauffele settled for 68 and Burns posted 67, the low round of those with Sunday morning tee times at Quail Hollow. Pretty nifty. But not matching-tattoo nifty.
"I don’t know," Burns said when Balionis asked a follow-up about what tattoos they would have gotten. "I had some pretty good ideas for him, but unfortunately, we’ll never know."
Too bad.
