PGA Championship 2025: Rory McIlroy had the perfect reaction to the horn blowing on Saturday at Quail Hollow

May 17, 2025

Surprise, surprise, it's raining again at Quail Hollow. This time, though, it's actually affecting the starting times for Saturday's third round of the PGA Championship.

Play was set to begin at 8:15 a.m. ET, with Max Greyserman and Sam Burns leading the way off No. 1 tee. The next twosome was the power pairing of Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, and groups would continue going off in 10-minute intervals until 2:45 p.m. with the final pairing of Jhonattan Vegas and Matthieu Pavon.

Then Mother Nature intervened, first at 7:30 a.m. when the PGA of America announced practice was suspended due to dangerous weather in the area. The delay lasted just 17 minutes, with practice resuming at 7:47 a.m.

After warming up and rolling some putts, McIlroy was on his way to the first tee box when he and the rest of the folks on property heard that fateful sound. A bone-chilling one for golfers of all stripes. The horn. ESPN captured his reaction, which was priceless:

About as relatable as the five-time major winner will ever be. The guy was locking in. Headed into the cauldron. Preparing for battle. We've all been there on a much smaller scale. It's Saturday morning, you've waited all week for this round, finally got away from the wife and kids and *HONNKKKKKK*. Nothing worse.

As for McIlroy, he will now have to wait, wait and wait some more. Tee times have been revised so that players will now go out in threesomes off both the first and 10th tees, starting with the 11:43 a.m. group of Joaquin Niemann, Wyndham Clark and Tyrrell Hatton. McIlroy, who was set to start at 8:15 a.m. off No. 1 with Schauffele, will now be at 1:38 p.m. off No. 10 with Schauffele and Chris Kirk. A strange week at Quail Hollow continues.
