The PGA of America calls out the worst baseball teams in the most random dagger of the year

There’s an easy explanation for why most of us media members ended up in the media, and that reason is that we were bad at math growing up. Professional golf tournaments know this, which is why they send out a list of stats (oftentimes compiled by Elias Sports Bureau) for us right-brained creative types who need to check a calculator every time we tip 18 percent.

It’s a nice thing to have, especially when up against a deadline or trying to connect the pieces of a story. And this year’s PGA Championship is no exception, sharing a six-page list of bullet points that range from “Each of the last eight PGA Championships was won by a player who today has multiple major championships on his resume” to “Englishman Jim Barnes won the first two PGA Championships, in 1916 and 1919, however no player representing Great Britain has won this championship since.”

Those are nice tidbits, but that’s not why we’re here. We’re here because the PGA of America went out of its way to dagger three baseball teams … and we find it hysterical.

“Rory McIlroy has three wins in eight starts this season (since January 1st),” the release states. “That is a higher winning percentage (.375) than the White Sox, Pirates and Rockies in Major League Baseball (as of Monday 5/11).”

We’d love to know where this came from and how it snuck into the list. Perhaps a self-hating Pirates fan has had enough and needed to let some steam out. Trust us, we get it!

No matter what happens this week, we already have a few losers at the PGA Championship. Unfortunately, we’re guessing this will be far from the last loss for the White Sox, Pirates and Rockies this season.
