Max Homa gave a very simple reason why he's in contention at the Valspar Championship for the first time
Max Homa has built a reputation of being great on Twitter that arguably overshadows the fact he's also great at golf. Not surprisingly, he also displays that quick wit when he's standing at a podium and not sitting behind a keyboard.
Homa fired a Friday 68 at the Valspar Championship to grab a share of the clubhouse lead at eight under at the time of this post. Shortly after, he was asked why he's playing so well at Innisbrook's Copperhead Course this week after missing the cut in his three previous attempts. Here, courtesy of NBC Sports' Will Gray, was his simple explanation:

Homa's missed cuts came in 2014, 2015, and 2019. Less than two months after that last missed cut, he won his first PGA Tour title at the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship. And he's only improved since.
The 30-year-old added an even bigger win to his resume at Riviera in February, and he's currently 18th in the FedEx Cup standings thanks to other top 10s at Bay Hill and Pebble Beach. OK, and he also did expand a bit on that answer. Here was his full response:
"I think I'm just better at golf now," he said. "I told my wife that there's a few tee shots out here I remember being anxious over and I showed up this week on Wednesday and was rolling my eyes that I thought that that was as demanding as it was. So I just think I'm getting a little bit better, feeling more comfortable out here. It's a golf course that should suit me pretty well the way I play the game typically, so it's nice to come back and kind of—I haven't been here in a while—so I had fresh, kind of fresh look at it and not really any bad memories, no good memories either, but that's okay sometimes."
Homa also created a new kind of memory on Monday when he made an albatross at Greystone CC, the first of his life. He had another good response when asked on Friday what club he used to hole the shot.
"3-wood," he said. "She's hot."
He'll be around all weekend, folks.
