U.S. Open 2020: Matt Wallace has caddie tend flag from 50 yards, promptly hits massive chunk
Confidence is key at the U.S. Open, where ejection lurks at every corner of the golf course. If you are not fully committed to every shot, you will get exposed.
That's why we have nothing but the utmost respect for this move from England's Matt Wallace, who arrived at Winged Foot's par-5 12th at one under for the championship. After hitting a booming drive, Wallace then hit his second just in front of the green, leaving him with a 50-yard pitch shot to a back pin.
Understandably, Wallace was feeling himself. So he had his caddie go up and tend the flag, potentially so that he could hit it past the hole, using the slope to bring it back toward the cup. Confidence level: 1 billion.
He just didn't execute:
Tough scene. If you're going to go full Phil, you better at least scare the hole. Something like this:
But to lay the sod over it? Yikes. Again, can't help but respect the confidence, but the execution was not there. Wallace went on to bogey, three-putting from there. Doesn't get more relatable than being 40 yards short over a par-5 green in two and making six.
