AUGUSTA, Ga. — Shane Lowry wasn't having it. He'd just come off the 18th hole having finished bogey-bogey, dropping from five back to seven back in a blink. He'd battled all day to post an under par round and get inside the top four on the leader board. Instantly spoiled.

The absolute last thing he wanted to talk about was his good buddy Rory McIlroy, who has a touchdown lead over him. But the topic of McIlroy making his epic charge behind him came up, naturally.

"No. No, I'm not going to stand here and talk about Rory for 10 minutes," Lowry said, defiantly. "I'm trying to win the tournament, as well. I know that's what y'all want me to talk about, but I've just had a shit finish, I've got a chance to win the Masters tomorrow, and I'm going to go hit some balls."

In fairness to the former Open champ, not all bogey-bogey finishes are created equal. Lowry's was particularly maddening. At the 17th, he came up short in two but hit a deft chip to three feet to seemingly secure par. Instead, Lowry's par putt violently lipped off the left edge and left him with an even longer putt for bogey, which he was able to hole. At 18, Lowry pulled his drive into the left woods and then hit his approach into the right greenside bunker. He hit a poor sand shot to 29 feet and had to settle for another bogey.

    He was running hot.

"I just want to do as best I can. I hated that short putt on 17," he said. "The very minute I get up there, that pin is just horrible. I just hit it too hard and tried to jam it in the hole and then just hit two poor drives. Driver didn't feel comfortable today. Yeah, it was hard. It was hard out there. But it was great fun at the same time.

"It's where you want to be. It's what you want to do. It's what you live for. But I want to win this tournament, so I'm pissed off."

Understandable stuff from Lowry, who has been so consistently good for so long now that a lot of the golf world fancied his chances this week. Now he has an uphill climb, and he'd likely need some help from his pal, McIlroy, to have any real chance. He clearly felt afterward like he'd thrown it away a bit at the end.

To his credit, he stuck around and answered a number of questions from reporters, but had one last thing to say before he bolted for the practice range.

"I'm going to go and -- we talk about Collin Morikawa a few weeks ago. I think we need time," Lowry said. "I think I need a half an hour now to sit there and gather my thoughts. I can't be coming to talk to you guys straightaway. It shouldn't be happening. I don't agree with it.

"Tennis players have to talk to the media, but they have a half an hour or hour before they have to do it. I feel like we should have the same thing. That's how I feel. I'm probably going to say something stupid. I probably already have said something stupid because I'm pissed off right now. I'm just going to leave, okay?"
