BETHESDA, Md. -- The USGA's pairings committees love to play with the early-rounds groupings, such as this year's threesome of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, and Martin Kaymer --  numbers 1, 2, and 3 in the world rankings. The idea was to give the paying customers their money's worth. Well. The group returned scores of 74, 74, and 75, a total of 10 over par. Their best-ball score was 64, worst-ball was 85.

Only three times did all three players make par or better on the same hole. They made five 6's.

    Time for a refund.
