New Jersey's Upper Montclair Country Club, seen here hosting the 2009 Sybase Classic, has held LPGA events on and off since 1979. It will do so again in 2022.

The Cognizant Founders Cup moved from Arizona to New Jersey in 2021, but didn’t have its next location lined up until now. The event, whose $3 million purse is one of the largest on the LPGA Tour schedule (bested only by the majors and the CME Group Tour Championship), will now be played at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J.

If Upper Montclair sounds familiar, it’s because it is a familiar spot for the LPGA. The course hosted LPGA events in 1979, 1980, 1983, 1984 and 2007-2009. The championship course was also host to several golf scenes in the award-winning HBO series, The Sopranos. Site of an A.W. Tillinghast design originally, Robert Trent Jones Sr. remodeled the 27-hole facility in 1956.

The Founders Cup has been played since 2011, as a celebration of the LPGA’s 13 founders. Cognizant, a professional services company, came on as title sponsor in 2021.

“We’re committed to creating equal opportunity and diversity, both in and out of the workplace,” said Gaurav Chand, Chief Marketing Officer, Cognizant, in a press release. “We invested in the Cognizant Founders Cup as part of that commitment with the goal of helping to build a better future for the next generation of female golfers. We’re pleased to continue that effort and look forward supporting the talented athletes of the LPGA in 2022 and beyond through our sponsorship.”

The event will be played May 12-15, with Jin Young Ko scheduled to defend her title.
