Katrina Dawson Foundation launched in honor of former R&A Captain's slain daughter

January 06, 2015

Katrina Dawson, the 38-year-old daughter of former R&A captain Sandy Dawson, was killed tragically on Dec. 16 when Muslim extremist Man Haron Monis gunned down her and two others in a Sydney cafe before taking the business hostage. Dawson reportedly died trying to save her pregnant friend, who was among those killed.

The Dawson family published a heartfelt statement following the news -- "We are shocked and devastated by the tragic and senseless death of our darling Katrina," they said -- and on Tuesday, both the family and the R&A launched the Katina Dawson Foundation.

The foundation has already received more than 1,500 donations, according to a release, with the R&A pledging 100,000 Australian Dollars. All proceeds, according to the website, will go towards advancing the educational opportunities for women.
