Juli Inkster boldly puts controversial captain's pick Paula Creamer in opening match

The most-talked about story line involving this year's Solheim Cup has been whether Paula Creamer should even be involved. We won't have to wait long to find out the status of her golf game once the matches start.

Friday's schedule was announced on Thursday and many were surprised to see Creamer's name slotted in the opening match. It appears U.S. captain Juli Inkster is doubling down on her controversial captain's pick.

"I have faith in her," Inkster said. "I have all the confidence in the world in her. It was a no-brainer for me."

In a similar move, U.S. captain Tom Watson put his controversial captain's pick, Webb Simpson, out in the opening match of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Simpson popped up his first tee shot, played poorly in a bad loss, and didn't play again until Sunday's singles during the American loss to the Europeans.

Creamer has a strong 12-6-5 career record in the Solheim Cup, but is in the midst off the worst season of her pro career. In 18 starts, she managed just three top-10 finishes, with a T-5 being her best performance. She's also won just once in the past five years, and is coming off four consecutive missed cuts.

A no-brainer, huh?

Creamer and Morgan Pressel will take on Suzann Pettersen and Anna Nordqvist in Match No. 1. The U.S. is trying to stop a first-ever losing streak to the Europeans in the event this week. Here are the other matches in Friday's morning foursome session at Germany's Golf Club St. Leon-Rot:

Match 2: Michelle Wie/Brittany Lincicome (USA) vs. Charley Hull/Melissa Reid (Europe)

Match 3: Cristie Kerr/Lexi Thompson (USA) vs. Karine Icher/Azahara Munoz (Europe)

Match 4: Stacy Lewis/Lizette Salas (USA) vs. Sandra Gal/Catriona Matthew (Europe)
