Getting Around a Dogleg
The hole diagram here is what I would describe as Design 101: a dogleg-left par 4 with trouble along the left side (or inside corner) of the hole. The trouble could be a hazard, such as water or a bunker, or it could just be trees or mounding. The green has some protection on the right side, either a bunker or water. So the architect is enticing you to challenge the inside corner off the tee. As a course designer, I try to let golfers use their strong suit. As a player, you need to be aware of this principle and assess your options with a dose of honesty.
