Spieth, who lost in a playoff in the event last year, had six birdies and a single bogey at the Golf Club of Houston and is tied for 11th, as is 51-year-old Davis Love III.
The leader is Charley Hoffman, who posted an eight-under par 64. He is one ahead of Dustin Johnson, Roberto Castro and Scott Brown, all with 65s.
Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, opened with a three-under par 69.
