There is no such thing as a guaranteed winner on the PGA Tour, but Russell Henley was at 22 under par and held a six-shot lead heading into the final round of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. At the very least, history was well on his side as it was the 18th time a player had shot that low a score over 54 holes, and all 17 previous times that golfer went on to claim victory.

Ultimately Henley, 33, shot a final-round one-under 70 to shoot a 23-under-par total and win his fourth PGA Tour title by four shots over Brian Harman, who shot a final-round 66. Scottie Scheffler (62), Joel Dahmen (65), Troy Merritt (67), Seamus Power (68) and Will Gordon (69) all tied for third place at 18 under par.

Despite having won three previous times on tour, Henley did have a spotty record when it cames to holding the lead entering the final round. Six times previously he’d been the 54-hole leader and just once did he close out the victory (2013 Sony Open, his maiden win).

Interestingly, too, before this week the last time a player held a six-shot lead entering the final round of a tour event the golfer did not come away with the title. Mind you there were some unusual circumstances in that case. Jon Rahm was a six-shot leader entering the final round of the 2021 Memorial, only to be forced to withdraw from the tournament on Saturday night after testing positive for COVID-19.

The overall purse in Mexico is $8.2 million. Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut including the $1,476,000 that went to the victor.
