Haney recovering from fall

September 16, 2009

Swing coach Hank Haney has been taking shots all year, but the online criticism and verbal abuse was nothing compared to the physical pain suffered earlier this month on a beach in Hawaii.

On vacation at Kukio on the Big Island near Kona with Discovery Land founder Michael Meldman and former NHL star Brett Hull, Haney was paddle boarding when a gust of wind blew him into the rocks. Trying to break his fall in 3 feet of water, Haney reached back to break his fall and dislocated his left shoulder.

Once he was out of the water, Haney had to walk a half mile on a scorching hot beach with his feet and hand bleeding, wait 25 minutes for an ambulance, drive 50 minutes to a hospital and another two hours before his shoulder was put back in its socket. Luckily, Hull's wife, Darcie, is a former paramedic. Haney is at his home in Meldman's Vaquero community near Dallas, recovering.

"What a mess," he said in an e-mail. "Big setback to my golf."
