One of our new favorite golf shirts costs less than $11 (yes, really)

This non-traditional golf shirt is great for cooler temperatures and won’t break the bank

September 08, 2020

The heat and humidity of summer is starting to give way to more reasonable, cooler temperatures—at least here in the Northeast. With the temperature shift common this time of year in most locales, it’s time for a different type of option than your go-to summer choices. Especially for a quick nine-hole round in the evening when a chill can start to set in, golfers need something slightly warmer (but not hot), preferably with a little more skin coverage to make us a less optimal target for bugs. With all of this in mind, I stumbled upon this long-sleeve performance shirt by Hanes.

There are versions for men and women from Hanes, who you wouldn’t think would make an ideal shirt for playing golf in. But I can attest, these are worth considering, especially at the price ($9 for the women’s version, $11 for the male). For women, there are a lot of cute colors to choose from, which is always a good starting point. I found the fit to be standard size-wise, and the cut is flattering. It’s lightweight and moisture-wicking, so if you tee off in the morning and it warms up a bit, you’re not going to overheat. The lightweight fabric also makes it easy to move in.

On the men’s side, expect the same lightweight performance jersey knit fabric with a quick-dry blend. The Fresh IQ odor-eliminating technology will keep things feeling fresh, and the athletic fit is comfortable on its own or as a base layer. The primary difference in the men’s and women’s version is the addition of UPF 50+ sun protection for the men’s shirt. Colors range from the golf staples—white, navy, red—to bolder neons, pink and orange options. The shirt is $11 on the Hanes website, or grab two for $18 on Amazon.

This is a great, less formal option for rounds when a short-sleeve or sleeveless top doesn’t seem right, but it’s still too warm to start layering. And, like I said, it’s tough to go wrong with this price point.
