Day 1 of the 2016 British Open from Royal Troon is complete. And it was one for the books.

The tone was set early by Patrick Reed, who fired a five-under 66 to tie a Troon first-round Open record. However, by Thursday's end, Reed's round was an afterthought thanks to the work of Phil Mickelson. The 46-year-old tied a major championship record with an eight-under 63 and came oh-so-close to an elusive 62. Lefty enters Friday with a three-shot lead over Reed and Martin Kaymer, who's looking to add a third major to his resume.
