SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Recent hip surgery has Davis Love III sitting out the 98th PGA Championship and missing out on defending his Wyndham Championship title in August. That doesn't mean the U.S. Ryder Cup captain isn't busy at Baltusrol this week, though. Glory's last shot is also the best shot for American golfers to punch their tickets to Hazeltine this fall.

"There's a lot of guys that we're watching," Love said of potential captain's picks. "I'll be more interested in the results of this tournament probably more than any."

The top eight players in the Ryder Cup standings at the end of next month's Barclays will automatically earn spots on the team. After the third FedEx Cup Playoff event, the BMW Championship, Love will make three captain's picks. He'll then make his final choice the following week at the conclusion of the Tour Championship.

When we caught up to Love at the PGA Championship, he told us EVERYTHING will go into these decisions -- even down to how the wives will get along.

"We're a group of 24, 26 people going on a mission, and you have to make sure that you have good team chemistry," said Love, who was also on-hand at Baltusrol to conduct a special Q&A with Chase Sapphire Preferred card members.

Among the other things Love discussed with us are what it's like having Tiger Woods as an assistant captain, the heated behind-the-scenes ping pong, er, table tennis battles in the U.S. team room, and, of course, his memorable relationship with Sammy the Squirrel. Have a listen:
