Six of the top 10 golfers in the World Ranking are making the trip to San Diego to play in this week's Farmers Insurance Open. The event, contested during the opening two rounds on the South and North Courses at Torrey Pines, starts Wednesday and finishes Saturday to avoid a conflict with the NFL’s conference championship games.
Headlining the field is World No. 1 Jon Rahm, a past winner at the Farmers (2017) who also won his first major at Torrey Pines last June when the South Course hosted the U.S. Open. Rahm also was runner-up at the 2020 Farmers and finished T-7 in 2021.
Other top tour pros making the trip to Torrey include Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele (a San Diego-area native), Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed, the defending Farmers champ. Reed sailed to victory at Torrey Pines a year ago, winning by five shots, the widest margin of victory in his career. He’s looking to become just the fourth repeat winner in the event history.
Also notably competing this week is Dustin Johnson, who is making his first PGA Tour start since playing The CJ Cup @ Summit in October.
The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.512 million prize money payout from the $8.4 million overall purse.
