Fantasy Fix: Isn't it about time for Luke Donald to win again?
By Alex Myers
Sometimes, you need a little extra inspiration to come out of a mini-slump. Our strategy this week? Make our picks for this week's Valspar Championship by watching a rerun of last year's final round. OK, so that happened by accident, but we'll give it a shot. Here's the lineup we're going with:
Starters -- (A-List): Luke Donald. A winner at Innisbrook in 2012, Donald also has a T-4 and a T-6 since 2010. We just hope he doesn't go with the all-blue outfit he went with on Sunday last year:
(B-List): Jason Dufner. The Duf is coming off back-to-back T-9s at World Golf Championships, but both should have been higher. During Sunday's final round at Doral, he missed several putts from close range to fall out of contention.
(B-List): Jordan Spieth. Speaking of missing short putts, Spieth just yanked one from about two feet on No. 9. Ouch. That miss kept him from finishing higher from T-7. He'll return to Innisbrook as a 20-year-old this time and a guy who has been circling a win all year.
(C-List): Boo Weekley. Last year's runner-up finished his final round hours ahead of the leaders. Unfortunately, his Sunday 63 wasn't enough, and him having to stick around to see if he'd be in a playoff ruined his plan of getting some bass fishing in. What a great post-round interview.
Bench/Backups: Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, Jim Furyk, and Harris English.
Knockout/One-and-done pick: Luke Donald. It's been two years since his last win on the PGA Tour, but that victory came at this tournament. His T-4 last year matched his second-best result of 2013. Hmm. On second thought, Luke, why don't you stick with the blue again.
Previously used: Keegan Bradley (Doral), Tim Clark (Sony), Graham DeLaet (Phoenix), Rickie Fowler (Honda Classic), Bill Haas (Farmers), Charles Howell III (Humana), Dustin Johnson (Northern Trust), Martin Laird (Kapalua), Jimmy Walker (Pebble -- winner!).
