It’s easy to hit balls on the range in a vacuum. You get in a groove with one club, and you start striping them out there. But how well are you really doing? You need targets and goals for each shot to be able to measure. Use poles or other landmarks downrange to create a 20-yard wide runway. Spend equal time with your pitching wedge, 8-iron and 6-iron, hit at least 50 percent of your shots solidly and within the 20-yard runway in 15 minutes. Once you’ve mastered the 20-yard goal, pinch the gap down to 15 yards and go through it again. You can also use landmarks in front of you on the tee and down range to measure your consistency at curving shots one direction or another.
