College golfer gives amazing reaction to blowing his 'one shot at being on TV'

    May 08, 2025

Those playing in this week's PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship are getting the thrill of competing on a golf course, Whistling Straits, that's hosted both PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup. And with Golf Channel broadcasting the event, they also get a chance to be on TV.

But as one golfer found out on Wednesday, that's not always a good thing!

Let's bring in Lincoln University of Missouri's Jeff Maasen, who cameras—and mics!—picked up while playing the scenie par-3 17th at the Pete Dye track. Sadly, for Jeff, he didn't hit his best shot with the cameras rolling. And he lamented that after:

That's rough. HOWEVAH, as you can hear from the audio, Jeff at least turned the lowlight into a funny highlight. He blurted out "Jordan Spieth"—a reference to the crazy flop shot Spieth hit at the 2021 Ryder Cup from left of that green after teammate Justin Thomas left him in an awkward spot—and the broadcast picked up on that.

Of course, Maasen's shot finished well left of that and in Lake Michigan, causing him to re-tee. But still, well played, young man. Even if the actual shot wasn't well played.

"yea wind come off the water and i just wanted to cut one to the right side of the green and double crossed it," Maasen explained in the comments.

Oh well. On the bright side, this wound up being far more memorable—and viral—than if you had just hit the center of the green. At least, we think that counts as being on the bright side. Shake it off, Jeff.
