PGA Championship 2022: Paul Casey WDs from Southern Hills
David Cannon
Paul Casey pulled out of the PGA Championship Sunday morning.
The news isn’t necessarily a surprise. Casey, 44, has been battling back issues for much of 2022, issues that caused him to miss the Masters and the Valspar Championship (where he is a two-time champ) and forced him out after two holes at the WGC-Dell Match Play. Prior to the back problems Casey had been playing well, highlighted by a third-place finish at the Players Championship.
This was scheduled to be Casey’s 20th appearance at the PGA Championship. He contended in his past two appearances, finishing T-2 at Harding Park in 2020 and T-4 at Kiawah Island last May.
Casey is only the third player ranked in the Official World Golf Ranking top 100 to bow out of the Southern Hills proceedings. On Friday, Harris English withdrew as he makes his way back from hip surgery, while Phil Mickelson decided not to defend his title, continuing his sabbatical from golf.
Filling in for Casey in Russell Knox, who will be making his seventh PGA Championship start. Scott Stallings and Joel Dahmen are the next alternates.
