The Horschel family’s reaction to Billy’s winning putt at the BMW PGA Championship is premium feel-good fuel

    September 23, 2024

On Sunday at Wentworth Golf Club, Billy Horschel capped a season of nearlies and almosts with a cathartic BMW PGA Championship victory. Horschel drained a lengthy eagle putt on the second playoff hole to top Rory McIlroy—another recent victim of the “so close” syndrome—in the DP World Tour's flagship event and raised both hands to the sky in a show of relief as much as triumph. The scene was very different back in the Horschel household, however, where the whole family went wild as the Open Championship runner-up’s final putt fell. LOUD NOISES!

While Horschel’s celebration was complex, a mixture of several emotions—including exhaustion after a long season—the Horschel family delivered the sort of unbridled joy you might expect from a 74th-hole walk-off victory over one of the biggest brands in golf. At least three generations of Horschels were all screaming and jumping at once. Safe to say, if the neighbors were watching football instead of golf on Sunday, they found out who topped the leaderboard at Wentworth without having to change the channel.

Unfortunately, Horschel won’t get a chance to keep his mojo going at the Presidents Cup this weekend. Despite a strong end to the season, Horschel missed out on a captain’s pick for this year’s squad. But if he keeps this red-hot form rolling and the Horschel living room keeps rocking, he might get a chance face McIlroy again at Bethpage Black next fall.
