Tyrrell Hatton of England celebrates with the trophy after winning during the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in 2020.

A year ago, the Arnold Palmer Invitational was the final PGA Tour event to be completed before COVID-19 pandemic forced the tour to take a three-month hiatus. It returns this week with defending champion Tyrrell Hatton leading a standout field at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.

Joining with Hatton in Orlando are Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Viktor Hovland, Harris English and Max Homa.

Hatton claimed his first PGA Tour title last March in challenging weather conditions. Just one player—Matthew Fitzpatrick—shot a round in the 60s the entire weekend. Hatton’s four-under 284 winning 72-hole score was one of just four sub-par totals for the week.

The Englishman continued a string of international winners at Bay Hill. The last time an American was victorious at the event was 2015, when Matt Every won the title.

This year’s champion earns some addition perks given the API’s designation as an elevated tour event. A three-year exemption on the PGA Tour is given rather than the standard two years and the winner receives 550 FedEx Cup points.

The overall prize money payout is $9.3 million with the winner’s share coming to $1.674 million.
