Annika Sorenstam gives birth to baby boy

March 22, 2011

It's open for debate what was more surprising on Monday -- that Annika Sorenstam gave birth to her second child at 27 weeks, or that she was tweeting about it just an hour later.

Never one content to sit still, the LPGA legend announced the birth of William Nicholas McGee via her Twitter account:

"SURPRISE! I went into labor today & William Nicholas McGee was born at 6:33 PM. I'm well. Will is hanging in there fine for being 27 weeks."

The child is the second for Annika and husband Mike McGee. They also have a daughter, Ava, who was born some three weeks early. Sorenstam retired at the end of 2008 season with 72 career wins.

UPDATE: Sorenstam has explained the early birth, which was caused by a "placenta abruption."
