A Quick Fix For That Slice Off The Tee

April 20, 2016

How was your round last weekend? Anything go wrong? Wouldn't it be nice if you had a teacher to fix it?

Golf Digest has the best network of teachers and they're here to help you out. All you need to do is send an email to editor@golfdigest.com with whatever went wrong with your game, and we’ll choose one to have a teacher address in our weekly What The Heck Happened segment.

This week’s question comes from Tim McDermott who’s having trouble with his tee ball. He told us that he’s hitting a slice off the tee. Let’s get that fixed.

Jason Guss, one of our Golf Digest Best Young Teachers, says that there are three things you should think about to fix your slice off the tee.

THE SLICE

Guss says the first you should do is make sure the club face is not rotating open on the back swing. If it’s opening as you take it away, you’ll likely be open at impact. “A great thought,” says Guss, “Feel the clubface look at the golf ball longer in the takeaway.”

Number two, says Guss, is to make sure you swing on a more inside path on the downswing. You want to feel like you’re swinging at a target way to the right. Or – feel like you’re hitting the inside portion of the golf ball.

Last but not least. Try to hit the ball more off of the toe of the club, this will also eliminate slice.

Use this drill to put these thoughts into action: Put a tee inside the golf ball and try to hit the tee and the ball.
