The hilarious story of how Scottie Scheffler plays mind games when betting with Tony Romo
Isaiah Vazquez
Scottie Scheffler is good at golf. Better than anyone else in the world. He’s pretty good at trolling buddies on the golf course too when it comes to betting.
The buddy, on this occasion, is Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned NFL announcer. Earlier this year, Romo figured that the two had played golf together more than 500 times. Many of those times at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, where Scheffler has long worked with his swing coach Randy Smith.
Scheffler joined Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz on their Subpar podcast to let the listeners in on a little secret.
“Tony always has the most risk in a game, so when he plays good he wins and when he plays bad he loses big because he’s got side games with everybody,” Scheffler said. “If we’re playing good we’re going to make a bunch of birdies and double the bets.
Here’s the good stuff.
“There’s been a couple times when he’s played where he’s written checks to guys. I don’t ever go to the bank, so I keep it in my little pouch. Whenever I go to pay him back … let’s say he owes me a thousand bucks so he writes me a check for a thousand bucks. Then the next week I lose $600, I give him the check and am like, ‘alright you owe me $400.’
“He gets so mad ... ‘this is not real money, this isn’t fair.’ Tony it has your name on the check, this is what you gave me, I’m giving it back to you now. ‘This isn’t real money.’ This is what you did.
Scheffler never goes to the bank. That’s funny enough. But the check thing, tremendous.
The World No. 1, who won seven times this year, including the Masters, Olympics and FedEx Cup Playoffs, had plenty of good things to say about Romo and his game.
“He’s a really, really good golfer,” Scheffler said. “If his body would cooperate for him I think he’d be a lot better. But it’s tough for him, getting beat up for that many years in the NFL.”
Earlier this year, Romo was asked what it’s like to play with Scheffler so often. This came in a clip posted by the PGA Tour Champions on social media. Pretty amazing too.
"I don't think I've ever played a round of golf with Scottie Scheffler and him not break 70, ever, which is insane," Romo said. "Like now I'm actually starting to count it, where I'm like, we've got to be around 500. I'm like, not one day you're off in golf where you shoot 70, 71."
